About Beechworth

Beechworth is situated in the foothills of the Victorian Alps, 38km (½ hour) from Albury-Wodonga to the north-east, and 30km from Wangaratta to the south-west. Melbourne is 3 hours drive to the south. It has a population of 4,100 and is a historic goldrush town dating back to 1852.

Many attractions exist in the surrounding areas, including:

  • Wineries – Beechworth is a wine region, predominantly consisting of independent, small to boutique winemakers and growers, and produces some of Australia’s finest wines, particularly Chardonnay, Shiraz and Gamay.   • Close by is the renowned wine area of Rutherglen.
  • Skiing – The ski fields of Mt Hotham, Falls Creek and Mt Buffalo are all within 1½ hours drive from Beechworth.
